Event Report

What: Fedora 11 Singapore Launch

When: Wed, 10th June 2009 @ 1815hrs

Where: FTSE Room, Capital Tower, 9th Floor, 168 Robinson Road Singapore 068912

Fedora Ambassadors Present : Harish Pillay, Eugene Teo, Jason Benedict Low, Roy Ong

Total Attendance: 125 pax

Evening began with a rousing welcome from Harish whom proceeded to introduce the audience to Fedora, the project and the fundamentals of Freedom, Friends, Features, First. Thereafter, it was a introduction to the Fedora Ambassadors present and off to the demos we went.

Starting things simple with Desktop Fundamentals, showing the audience the updated boot sequence, OpenOffice, Firefox and out of the box support for Internet Banking from one of the largest banks in Singapore [1] (Firefox with jre-1.6.0-openjdk). Whoa the crowd a little with Compiz, installation of codecs and the ease of desktop customization.

Moving right along to showcasing the Virtualization capabilities of Fedora 11 through qemu/kvm and the ease of setting up a virtual guest instance using the re-designed virt-manager. Also directed the audience at the improved graphical console for virtual guest instances where Fedora 11 is able to provide more accurate mouse pointer positioning and higher screen resolutions.

Communications are a huge part of our daily lives. Fedora 11 helps with Pidgin, the universal chat client where support for Twitter and Facebook could be easily added for extended usage. Mobile broadband connectivity and sharing of Internet connectivity through Wi-fi was also showcased.

Fedora 11's use could be further extended with the inclusion of 3rd party repositories. Customized desktop, online games, proprietary codecs could all be added easily, making Fedora 11 truly a desktop that all can enjoy.

A lively Question and Answer session followed where replies and knowledge sharing was evident from the floor and the Ambassadors

Each attendee received a Fedora 11 LiveCD and based on the enthusiasm and excitement shown throughout the night, I'm sure these will be put to good use.

40 individuals expressed interested in signing up as Fedora Ambassadors / Campus Ambassadors. Details were collated and will be acted upon.

Truly a wonderful, awesome evening spent with like-minded individuals.

Special thanks to Mr. Alan Ho and Ms. Jasmine Ee, without whom, the event would not have been possible.

Pictures and Presentation are attached.
