Here's what I found when researching ...

Here's a simple breakdown on the ESTIMATED actual cost of a new car when it is brought in Singapore either by a Parallel Importer or an Authorised Dealer.

(OMV X 2.36) + COE price + approx. $5k

where

(a) 2.36 factor is derived from the unit cost of vehicle, 110% ARF, 20% Custom Duties, 5% GST and 1% Others a.k.a. Hidden/unforeseen costs

(b) COE price is the actual price of the COE that is purchased for the car

(c) $5K is for miscellaneous costs like transport/logistics, insurance, admin fee, IU, leather seats, Tinted Film, fog lamps etc.

Assuming that a Honda Stream RSZ is selling at S$76,000 with an average OMV of S$20,000, we can have the following breakdown:

($20,000 x 2.36) + $15,000 + $5,000 = S$67,200

So the profits for the deal is S$76,000 - S$67,200 = S$8,800

Now, think about what you need to get out of this deal if the dealer is making S$8,800 for your car :D

Another new car calculation

Toyota Sienta
Registration date: April 2007
Priced at $62,888
COE $14,000
OMV $14,300

($14,300 x 2.36) + $14,000 + $5,000 = S$52,748
So the profits for the deal is S$62,888 - S$52,748 = S$10,140

lol - time to calculate cars again ... sigh sigh sigh

here's some numbers to think about.

(a) NEW HONDA STREAM
- $76,888
- interest rate 2.5% PA
- COE $13,000
- OMV $17,962
- if drive till 05 years old and scrap, cost per month = $1,086
- if drive till 10 years old and scrap, cost per month = $719

(b) USED HONDA STREAM
- Jun 2007
- $70,800
- interest rate 2.75% PA
- COE $18,539
- OMV $17,218
- if drive till 05 years old and scrap, cost per month = $1,090
- if drive till 10 years old and scrap, cost per month = $715
- http://www.sgcarmart.com/main/info-2EofSEeE-1109.html

(c) USED HONDA STREAM
- May 2007
- $66,800
- interest rate 2.75% PA
- COE $16,101
- OMV $15,900
- if drive till 05 years old and scrap, cost per month = $1,066
- if drive till 10 years old and scrap, cost per month = $681
- http://www.sgcarmart.com/main/info-2EEasJYN-1000.html

(d) USED HONDA STREAM
- Feb 2007
- $68,888
- interest rate 2.75% PA
- COE $13,001
- OMV $21,000
- if drive till 05 years old and scrap, cost per month = $1,117
- if drive till 10 years old and scrap, cost per month = $694
- http://www.sgcarmart.com/main/info-2EfWpcJ8-1000.html

(e) USED HONDA STREAM
- Dec 2006
- $63,900
- interest rate 2.75% PA
- COE $14,389
- OMV $18,423
- if drive till 05 years old and scrap, cost per month = $1,049
- if drive till 10 years old and scrap, cost per month = $653
- http://www.sgcarmart.com/main/info-2Eft6rf-1280.html

So based on my calculations, car (a) is the new car and car (e) is the
most worthwhile of all the used cars. So, let's just compare the new car
(a) and the used car (e)

new car (a) drive till 05 years old = $1,086 per month
used car (e) drive till 05 years old = $1,049 per month
difference is $37 per month
over 5 years - that's 37 x 60 months = $2,220

new car (a) drive till 10 years old = $719 per month
used car (e) drive till 10 years old = $653 per month
difference is $66 per month
over 10 years - that's 66 x 120 months = $7,920

so based on these numbers - it just doesn't seem right to purchase a
used car for a mere $66 per month savings in the long run.

sigh. this calculation tough :P

ps - by the end of today, we'll know the result of the 2nd Feb COE bidding and find out what's the increase. just for a comparision - the 1st Feb COE bidding results are as follows:

Category A (Cars 1,600cc and below, and taxis) - $12,002
Category B (Cars 1,601cc and above) - $13,209
Category C (Goods vehicles and buses) - $13,001
Category D (Motorcycles) - $999
Category E (Open) - $13,301
